Donn "Salamander Slim" Folkerts, 65, of Sterling passed away Sunday, November 6, 2016 in Sterling. Celebration of life services will be at 4:00 pm Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Corsberg Theatre, NJC. This will be followed by a retrospective showing of his art work in the Youngers Gallery. Donn was born on December 16, 1950 in Sidney, NE to Lynn and Wilma Folkerts. He spent his younger years in Peetz before his family moved to Sterling. He graduated from Sterling High School and Northeastern Junior College. It was at NJC that he met the love of his life, Victoria Dyksterhuis. They married August 16, 1975 at Sterne's Park in Littleton, CO. They celebrated their 40th anniversary last year with a trip to Hawaii given to them by family and friends. Donn was self-employed as a painting contractor and sign painter, Donn's Decorating & Signs for 38 years. He was known as a talented craftsman. Donn was also an artist and a musician. He played with the NJC Jazz Band and other Colorado and Nebraska bands including: Café Monkey, August on the Equator, Mooncats, Bluezrockers, and Brian Lee Lafler. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. He was known for his musical knowledge, cooking and baking skills and most of all his love for his children and grandchildren. Donn is survived by his wife Victoria Folkerts of Sterling; son Nathanael (Cherell) Folkerts of Arvada; daughter Naomi Folkerts (Pierce Windom) of Westminster; sisters Linda Folkerts of Ft. Collins, Kristi (Terry) Schneider of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Pam Flanigin of Cheyenne, WY; brothers Cliff (Leona) Folkerts of Rock Springs, WY and Mike (Ann) Folkerts of Aurora; grandson Kingston Folkerts of Arvada and granddaughter Nola Folkerts of Arvada; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Lynn Folkerts and mother Wilma Folkerts.
