Doris A. Markie, 78, died Dec. 10, 2016, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, following a long and life-filled battle with cancer, where she continued to live her life with such grace, dignity and kindness. Doris passed away peacefully with family by her side. She was born on May 17, 1938, in Bristol, Connecticut, the daughter of Leo and Doris Lavoie. She married Robert Markie in Bristol, Connecticut, in 1956. Doris was an exceptional businesswoman, owning and operating businesses in Connecticut and Vermont. Later in life, she was employed by Rite Aid Pharmacy, serving in management; she was a lead manager in the opening of Rite Aid Pharmacies in Vermont, New York and Tennessee. Doris spent her golden years working for the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association, helping to serve the needs of clients throughout Rutland County. She an avid bird watcher, loved gardening, and received her Master Gardeners License at the age of 75. Doris shared her love of gardening by volunteering her time in the community garden at Castleton Community Seniors Inc. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Sherman of Leesburg, Virginia; son David and his wife, Barbara Markie, of Owego, New York; son Don and his wife, Mary Markie, of West Haven, Vermont; son Ron Markie of Hampton, New York; and a brother, Kenneth. In addition, Doris was blessed with 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Markie. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
