Doris Melton TerrellBakersville - Doris Melton Terrell, 84, passed away peacefully at home with family on September 13, 2017. She was born on September 16, 1932, to the late Crawford and Myrtle Melton of Rutherfordton, N.C. Doris attended school in Rutherford County before graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University, where she met her husband. After marrying in 1954, they settled in Bakersville, N.C. where Doris began teaching in the Mitchell County School System. After seven years, she left the school system to join the Department of Social Services where she worked as a social worker for 20 years. Afterwards, Doris joined Brian Center in Spruce Pine, N.C. as a social worker before returning to the Department of Social Services to start and supervise the Community Alternative Program (CAP). She continued working with this program in a part-time capacity until she retired in 2009. Doris was a devoted wife, mother and church member and a beloved friend to many. Serving others in the community was one of her greatest joys and she cherished time spent with her family and friends. She was a faithful member of the Bakersville United Methodist Church for over 60 years, teaching Sunday school and serving within the church on various councils including the nomination board and the Staff-Parish Committee. She enjoyed volunteering over the years and spent many hours at the Hospice Thrift Store, MyMeds, Farm Bureau Women, the Mitchell County Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, and the Mitchell County Community Fund, just to name a few. Doris is survived by her husband, David Edwin (Ed) Terrell of 62 years and her children, Susan Ferguson and husband Mike of Waynesville, N.C. and Julie Sayers and husband, Bryan of Winston Salem; grandchildren, Lindsey Curley and husband Chris of Raleigh, NC, Ryan Ferguson of Charlotte, NC and Emma Sayers of Winston-Salem; and one great-grandchild, Ava Curley. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 4:00 pm in the Bakersville United Methodist Church with Reverend Gene Lenier, Dr. Lewis Woodard, and Reverend William Ellis. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.Interment will be 3:00 pm Monday in the Finchers Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Clyde, NC.Memorials may be made to: Mitchell County Food Pantry, Hospice of the Blue Ridge, or Mitchell County Meals on Wheels.
