Dorothy was born on October 3, 1957, to Wonfidel Hamer and Lettie Elizabeth McCormick. In her early years, Dorothy worked on a farm and attended Southside School. She went on to graduate from Rowland High School in 1975. After graduating high school, Dorothy dedicated over 30 years of hard work and commitment to House of Raeford and Perdue Farms, where she made lasting contributions to both companies.
Throughout her life, Dorothy found love in two relationships. She had one son with the late Thomas Rowland, and two sons with the late Harding Mason. She was a loving and devoted mother who cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren. Dorothy had a passion for traveling and always enjoyed indulging in her favorite foods, particularly seafood and meals from her favorite restaurant, Fuller’s. She also loved playing softball with the Cotton Valley Sluggers, serving as a catcher and making lifelong memories with her teammates.
Dorothy’s faith played an important role in her life. She began her spiritual journey at Mount Pleasant A.M.E. Church, where she served as an usher. Later, she regularly attended Faith Lighthouse Apostolic Holiness Church, under the leadership of Bishop James Gordon, remaining committed to her faith and spiritual growth.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Kendrick Dwayne Mitchell (Portia McPhatter) of Laurinburg, NC, and Travis Lamont Mitchell (Erika Mack) of Raleigh, NC; four brothers, Joseph (Sarah) McCormick of Columbus, GA, Jerry (Carol) McCormick of Lumberton, NC, Ray (Angela) McCormick of Wake Forest, NC, and Timothy McCormick of Bladenboro, NC; one aunt, Rosetta Page; and three grandchildren, Tylik Javon McBride, Aria Ann Mitchell, and Travis Lamont Mitchell Jr; one great grandchild, Ariana Da’Nae Sutherland. She is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Wonfidel Hamer, her mother, Lettie Elizabeth McCormick, her son, Harding Mitchell, and her brother, James McCormick.
Dorothy’s life was a testament to her love for family, faith, and the simple joys of life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
May her soul rest in peace.
