WINSTON-SALEM - Dorothy Bell Miller, 93, a resident of Brookridge Baptist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem and formerly of Kinston, N.C., died Thursday, January 3, 2013. She was born on November 27, 1919, in Currie, N.C., the daughter of Herbert Patterson Bell Sr. and Anna Pearl Teague Bell. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, David Edward Miller Sr., and her three siblings, Betty Ann Johnston, Mack Lloyd Bell Sr. and H.P. Bell Jr. Dot graduated as valedictorian of her class at Long Creek Grady High School and graduated from Meredith College in 1940. Later she earned a masters degree in education from East Carolina University. She taught school for 37 years in North Carolina in various places, Kinston and surrounding areas, Atkinson and Long Creek are a few. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority, and served as treasurer for many years. Being the Sunday school teacher for the Carrie Mae Marston Sunday School Class and playing the piano for them were a joy for her especially after she retired. She cherished her many friends at First Baptist Church in Kinston. After retiring, she attended quilting classes weekly at Lenoir County Community College. She lovingly shared her talents and beautiful handmade quilts, potholders and chicken soup with her family and friends. More than anything, she loved God and her immediate and extended family. She served all of them well. Remaining family include her daughter, Gaye Benson and husband William A. Benson Sr., of Richardson, Texas and son, Dr. David Edward Miller Jr. and wife, Nancy of Clemmons, N.C. Grandchildren include the following, William A. Benson Jr. and wife Katie, of Cypress, Texas, David E. Miller III, Esq. and wife Jacqueline, of Durham, Adam Swaim Miller of Clemmons, Evan Miller of Clemmons, Nathan Miller of Chapel Hill and Carolyn Miller of Chapel Hill. Great-grandchildren include Jordan, Anna and Audrey Benson and David E. Miller IV. The funeral service will be held at Moore's Creek Baptist Church in Currie, N.C. on Monday, January 7 with the Rev. Dr. Chuck Towery and the Rev. Phillip G. Eakins officiating. The church will be open at twelve o'clock for viewing and the service will be at one o'clock to celebrate her life. Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall following the burial. Casket bearers are David E. Miller III, Adam Miller, Evan Miller, Nathan Miller, William A. Benson Jr., Clark Helton, and Chuck Helton.
