Dorothy Jean Webster, 94, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2019, at Brookside Inn Skilled Nursing Facility in Castle Rock, CO. Dorothy was born December 15, 1924, in Detroit, MI, to Kenneth Conrad Adams and Florence Marie Lacey.
Dorothy was raised by her mother and stepfather, Albert Edward Mallett, in Pontiac, MI. She spent her early years helping to care for her six siblings. Family life was central for her, although she also enjoyed Shirley Temple movies and her role as a drum majorette and baton twirler for a marching band. As a teen, she worked in the candy department at a Woolworth’s store and later held an office position for General Motors, where she processed government savings bonds from payroll.
At 18, Dorothy met Kenneth Clarence Webster and they married on November 22, 1943. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army and they lived briefly in Alabama before he was stationed in Europe during World War II. After his return, they eventually settled in Colorado near Kenneth’s family, where they raised three daughters in Fowler and Colorado Springs.
Dorothy loved her role as a mother and homemaker and always welcomed family and friends into her home. She also had an active work life and in the 1970s, had the opportunity to work for Van Briggle Pottery in Colorado Springs, where she engraved many pieces of the world-famous pottery. In the 1980s, she began a 15-year career at Sears and retired from there in 1994.
Dorothy was an artist at heart. She loved to paint (on canvas or walls), draw, design greeting cards, and practice calligraphy. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. She also liked baking and worked as a professional cake decorator at various times in her life.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Dorothy loved to dance and never passed up a chance to swing, rock ‘n’ roll, or bunny hop.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Judith Ann (Edwin) Stamps of Cañon City, CO; Mona Lee (Jay) Schoonmaker of Toledo, OH; and Keri Sue (Rocco) Genevese of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her brother Dale John (Vi) Mallett of Highland, MI.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter Teri Lynn Webster; ex-husband Kenneth Clarence Webster; brother Kenneth Conrad Adams; brother Alfred George Mallett; sister Frances Mary Staples; brother David Raymond Mallett; and sister Florence Marie Drapek.
No services will be held at this time. Donations in her memory can be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the Salvation Army.
