Doug will be remembered as a provider and a hard worker. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, who served 4 years active duty Air Force and 16 years with the Badin Air National Guard. After retirement, he was known locally as the “Maytag Man”, where he owned and operated Doug’s Maytag from 1989 to 2014. There, he formed lifelong friendships with everyone he encountered. He lit up a room just by walking in, he welcomed everyone as a friend with the ability to talk for hours. He could be seen on his daily walks around town talking to everyone he met along the way, with a smile on his face, and a cane in his hand. He truly enjoyed life and took every chance he could to show off his dancing skills, whether it was in the kitchen, a random Bee Gees song or at a wedding, he always put on a show.
The most important things in his life were his relationship with the Lord and his family. For over 40 years he attended First Baptist Church of New London, where he served for several years as a deacon and sang in the choir.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made out to First Baptist Church of New London, Gideons, and Hospice.
