Dr. Samuel Read Hall, 81, of Croydon, New Hampshire, passed on June 24, 1877. Dr. Samuel was born on October 27, 1795. He spent most of his life in Vermont and was educated at home by his family. He never went to college, but as he grew up he had a big voice in education. Dr. Samuel Read Hall had published many writings that gave recommnendations on teaching. Some of these recommendations, or methods are still used today by many teachers. He believed in experiential learning. He also believed that kids learned better throught demostrations and through hands-on teaching methods. In 1823, Hall established the first training school for teachers in Concord, Vermont where he had been also licensed to preach. In 1830, he helped establish the American Institute of Instruction in the United States. Many of the teaching methods we use today was inspired by this influential man.
