Ness, Earl L.Earl Leroy Ness, 96, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 9, 2017. He was born on June 9, 1921 to George and Lillian (Reif) Ness. On April 26, 1947 Earl married Norma Tuyls and had celebrated 70 years of marriage.Earl was a U.S.
Army veteran, having served overseas during
World War II. He re-upped in the Air Force and received a
Bronze Star and Certificate of Merit in recognition of meritorious service in support of combat operations.Earl was known as a legend when it came to stock car racing, taking home many trophies over the years. He started racing in 1946, and went on to win 15 track championships in his 24-year career. Earl was inducted into the Hall of Fame for racing in Luxemburg in 2010. He was known as the "Flying O" for one of the cars he drove. Earl won 800 to 900 races and usually came in second if he didn't win!He worked as a lineman for Wisconsin Public Service, then tried farming for 2 years and subsequently worked for the City Park and Forestry Dept. for 26 years, retiring at the age of 65. He loved his work and the camaraderie with his fellow workers. After retirement, Earl loved to walk for a visit at Muenster's gas station and Greg Ness' station. He often could be seen relaxing on his swing in the front yard of his home and visiting with anyone who stopped to talk.Earl enjoyed watching Packer games, and fishing and hunting up north at the cabin. He loved his grandchildren and their times at the cabin. They were the light of his life. He loved his trips to Las Vegas and Branson with his wife and close friends, usually Gale and Lee.Survivors include his beloved wife, Norma; their children: Linda (Chuck) Turner and their children, Steve Roth, Troy Turner, and Brett (Aviva) Turner; LuAnne (JT Townsend) Ness and their children, Tara (Mark) Clarkson, and Jessica (Andrew) Simon; Jim (Mary) Ness and their children, Lee Lemirand, Bud (Angie) Brice, Bill (Cheryl) Brice, Carrie (Jerry) Scray, and extended family; Marilyn (Clete Lepak) Ness and their children, Taylor Lepak, Chris (Kayla) Lepak, Weston (Jessica) Lepak, Trevor (Elaina) Lepak; Mike (Dee) Ness and their children, Scott (Tammi)
Smith and Gregg (Missy) Smith.He is further survived by his great grandchildren, Emmett, Cameron, Linnea, Cash, Aspen, Alex, Damien, Vincent, Aidan, Cordelia, Nick, Willy, Travis, Cassie, Kyle, and Katelyn; his great-great-grandchildren, Emma, Jacob, Alex, Leo, Aaron, Sawyer, and Kalea; as well as his favorite sister, Arlene Reinhard; his sisters-in-law, Florence Ness and Leona Ness; and Jean Ness who was like a sister-in-law to him; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and George Ness; brothers, Marvin and Harlan (Marie) Ness; his in-laws, August and Irene Tuyls; brother-in-law, Val Reinhard; sister-in-law, Lorraine Dart; two cousins, Gale Ness and Bob Ness; and many friends and relatives too numerous to mention.Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
