This obituary is administered by:
FREMONT — Edward Gerald McArdle Jr. died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at age 73 at his home on Clear Lake, Indiana. He was born on June 16, 1942, the second of nine children of Dr. Edward G. and Nancy Fox McArdle. Jerry grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, attended St. John the Baptist Elementary School and graduated from Portsmouth Priory High School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1960. He moved on to the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a degree in architecture in 1967. Jerry remained a loyal fan of the Fighting Irish football team for over 50 years. Jerry began his architectural career in Fort Wayne, his hometown, working for a local firm which later became Grinsfelder McArdle Associates. He changed design focus in 1982 when he "retired to practice architecture on a different scale" and concentrate on single family homes and remodeling, working as a sole practitioner out of his Fort Wayne home. His legacies can be found all over northeast Indiana, especially in many lake homes throughout the region. Nearly 10 percent of the homes on Clear Lake were touched by Jerry in some way. His passion for his art and his creativeness were evident to all that worked with him. Fort Wayne was also the site where he "re-met" Diane Fredrick who became his wife. They enjoyed family, friends, Notre Dame games, and Clear Lake sunsets for over 46 years together. Jerry was a past member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he served as president of the Parish Council. At Clear Lake, St. Paul Chapel was his year-round church when he moved to the lake in 2007. Outside of devotion to and enjoyment of his family, Jerry's loves in life were celebrating his Catholic faith, laughing with his friends, watching grandchildren's sporting events, smiling at toddler antics, cooking, anything Notre Dame, architecture and living at Clear Lake. He put his heart into his loves, and he will live on in the memories he created. He is survived by his wife, Diane McArdle of Clear Lake; three children, E.G. (Amelia) McArdle of Fort Wayne, Marne McArdle of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Tracy (Chris) Hughes of Clear Lake; and seven grandchildren, Keegan, Peter, Kellyn, and William McArdle and Evelyn, Eddie, and Annie Hughes. Also surviving are two sisters, Colleen (John) King and Nancy Bailey, three brothers, Tim (Luann) McArdle, Dan (Laurie) McArdle and Shawn (Linda) McArdle; in-laws, Janice McArdle, Susan McArdle, Steve and Ann Fredrick and Miles Fredrick; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Nancy McArdle, and brothers Patrick McArdle, Louie McArdle, and Jack and Karen McArdle. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, at St. Paul Chapel, 8775 E. C.R. 700N, Clear Lake, Fremont, Indiana, with Father Bernard Zajdel, Father Wilfred Logsdon and Father John Delaney officiating. Burial will be held at a later time at Covenanter Cemetery, Fremont, Indiana. Memorials are requested to the Clear Lake Land Conservancy, 111 Gecowets Drive, Clear Lake, Fremont, IN 46737 or University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, Attn: Jamie Barry, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN46556 Memo: In Memory of Jerry McArdle.
