Eleanor HartzellAGE: 97 • Shrewsbury"Army wife and Red Cross Volunteer"Eleanor Ruth Cottrell Hartzell, age 97, of Shrewsbury, NJ and formerly of Eatontown, NJ passed away at Brandywine At Sycamore Assisted Living on Saturday, May 27, 2017. She was born on August 3, 1919 to Dr. Elmer Bert Cottrell, PhD Ed, and Emma Elizabeth Anschutz Cottrell. She married Colonel Herbert Frank Hartzell (AUS Ret) on November 28, 1940 and he preceded her in death on October 24, 2012. Eleanor was born in Springfield, MA, and grew up in western PA, where her father was a professor at Slippery Rock State Teacher's College. She graduated from Slippery Rock in 1939 and taught Health and Physical Education at Baldwin Township High School near Pittsburgh, PA. During World War II she was employed with the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. and later served as an American Red Cross Hospital Volunteer for over 50 years. In 1987 the American Red Cross selected her for their Clara Barton Honor Award. As an Army wife, she accompanied her husband Herbert to posts in the US, Japan and Germany. She was a member of the Officers' Wives Club at these assignments, including many years at Ft Monmouth, NJ. Eleanor loved reading, dancing, following sports, and getting funny birthday cards. She was an avid doubles tennis player well into her eighties. The Hartzells lived in Eatontown, NJ, for over 40 years before moving to Shrewsbury, NJ, in 2010. Survivors include her son, Colonel Donald E. (& wife Mary W.) Hartzell (USAR, Ret) of Boalsburg, PA; daughter, Major General Trudy H. Clark (USAF, Ret) of Alexandria, VA; brother: Dr. Edwin B. (wife Millie W.) Cottrell, PhD of Hendersonville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Leslie Hartzell, David Hartzell (wife Jooyoung), Bryant Hartzell; and 2 great-grandsons, Landon Hartzell and Austin Hartzell. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband of 71 years. Funeral Services will be observed at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 10:00am with Rev. William Mumaw, pastor of Center Presbyterian Church of Slippery Rock presiding. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be given to the American Red Cross.
