Elizabeth Frances "Frankie" Christerson Grundy, 95, of the Valley Hill community of Washington County, passed away at 3:50 a.m., Friday, Sept.15, 2017, at her home on the historic Grundy Plantation.A native of Washington County, she was born on Aug. 5, 1922, to the late Richard C. "Dick" and Settie Stumph Christerson.Frankie grew up in a loving family, all attending Springfield Baptist Church. She was a 1942 graduate of Springfield High School. On March 12, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Springfield native Hugh Lee Grundy, who was serving our country in World War II. She was a wonderful wife, sister and friend who was always there for family and friends when needed. She was a homemaker, gourmet cook and gardener. Yet her greatest role in life was assisting her husband in his many endeavors. They traveled worldwide living in many places such as Dallas, Texas; Wilmington, Delaware; Topeka, Kansas and Baltimore, Maryland in post WWII days. Then his work took them to Shanghai, Hong Kong, ending up in Taipei, Taiwan for many years. They returned to the United States in 1972 where they lived and worked in McLean, Virginia, for four years and Homestead, Florida, for seven years before returning in 1984 to their historic Grundy Plantation at Valley Hill, the home of the Grundy family since 1780, for some good years of retirement. Work, and plenty of it, followed them where Frankie was still her husband's "right hand man" working right alongside him until the end.Preceding her in death was her husband of 68 years, Hugh Lee Grundy on Sept. 18, 2011, two sisters, Ruby Cocanougher and Katie Bellamy and her brother, Tom Christerson.Surviving her is one sister, Wanda "Bet" Carden of South Boston, Virginia, several nieces and nephews and her caregivers, Jackie Devers and Lisa Lewis.Following her request cremation was chosen.Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
