KENNEDY – Ellen Mary Williams Wheat, age 89, of Kennedy, Ala., died October 25, 2016, at Sansing Country Home in Carrollton, Ala.. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with Dwayne Pounds officiating. Burial will follow in Ashcraft Corner Cemetery with Nelson Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Junior Wheat; parents, Samuel S. Williams and Ollun Elizabeth Miller Williams; brothers, Noel M. Williams and Martin Faye Williams; and sisters, Olleen Williams and Naomi Williams.Survivors include her son, Andrew Giles Wheat of Vestavia Hills; sister, Zoe Puttnam; grandchildren, Nicholas Fisher (Holly) and Jessica ""Scooby"" Wheat Bradford (Chase); and great-grandchildren, Zoey Amber Fisher and Maverick Colt Bradford.Ellen was born on January 13, 1927. She grew up and attended school in Ensley, Ala. and attended college at Birmingham Southern where she studied English and Spanish education.Ellen met and married Virgil Junior Wheat. They adopted two children, Andrew and Carol, then settled in Vestavia Hills, Ala. She was a proud and active member of the Rocky Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and did clerical work in the church office as well as supporting and participating in church mission trips and many fund raising activities.She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as a faithful friend to many. Ellen was quick and always dependable with an ear for listening, wise, gave honest advice and best of all her willingness to laugh and smile. Her many hobbies included her Spanish club, reading, traveling, cooking, gardening, sewing and collecting and storing her many treasures. She died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of October 25, 2016. It was a beautiful passing of a beautiful soul on a beautiful autumn morning which was her favorite time of year.Pallbearers will be Logan McCool, Terry Humber, Tyler Scoggins, Chris Hughes, Richard Lewis, Timothy Lewis, Matt Cummings and David Williams.Honorary pallbearers are Gill Ellis and Bobby Scoggins.
