Kliewer, Ellis M.Ellis M. Kliewer passed to his Eternal home on March 31, 2017 in Banning California. Ellis was born on August 20, 1922 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Gerhert and Viola (Welty) Kliewer. He spent most of his life in Binghamton, NY where he worked at IBM for 40 years. He taught the IBM Tool and Die apprenticeship program and later worked as a Manufacturing Engineer. He spent 3 years of his youth in the Army/Air Force. He was stationed in England. He calibrated the B17 automatic pilot system and the Norden bomb site. While in the Air Force, he was involved in a highly dangerous and secretive mission called the Aphrodite Project. The concept using automatic pilots was the inspiration of General Jimmy Doolittle. This was the beginning of modern day drones. One of his favorite hobbies was trains. He built the world's best brass "0" scale model of the Big Boy locomotive.Since 2013, Ellis has lived with his son (Bill Kliewer & wife Heidi) in California. He was pre-deceased by his 1st wife, Geraldine Potts (1924-1967) and his second wife, Betty Norman (1927-2014). He is survived by his son Larry Kliewer of Missouri, Bill Kliewer & (Heidi), of California. Step children, Nancy McGeown of Colorado, Steve Sohner of NY and Sue Kliewer of Florida; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.A private Military funeral will be held at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California.
