Elmo Eugene StricklerMay 19, 1923 - February 1, 2014Elmo Eugene Strickler, 90, of Nampa, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at a Nampa retirement center. He was born on May 19, 1923 to Ira and Jennie Strickler in Octavia, Nebraska. He helped his father farm until 1940 when he graduated from High School in Surprise, Nebraska. Elmo attended cabinet making school in Omaha, NE and became a cabinet maker with Western Electric in Chicago, IL. He enlisted in the
U.S. Navy in 1942, and spent most of his service time on board the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Moore, sailing all over the world. Upon his Navy discharge of
WWII he enrolled in the University of Nebraska where he met and married Patricia E. Thomas on October 6, 1946. Elmo graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska where their son Timothy was born on June 25, 1951. Elmo took an engineering position with Phillip Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1952. Their daughter, Jennifer, was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on April 22, 1953. During his 33 years with Phillips Petroleum, Elmo was involved in research and design of several plastic products, and gas turbines for the North Sea platforms and traveled the world for business and pleasure. He was active in their Methodist Church, played horse shoes and cards and enjoyed making projects, such as a winning soapbox derby racer. After retiring in 1958 he and Pat moved to Nampa, Idaho in 1986, to be close to their children and grandchildren. Elmo and Pat joined Southside Methodist Church where he held several positions on committees and building maintenance. He was a volunteer for 7 years at the War Hawk Air Museum in Nampa, ID.He is survived by his two brothers, Leslie (Betty) Strickler of Kenai, AK and Wayne (Judy) Strickler of Lincoln, NE and many nieces and nephews and their families; Son Timothy (Debbie) Strickler of Nampa, ID, Daughter Jennifer (Earl) McCollough of Caldwell, ID; 7 grandchildren, Adam (Iris) Strickler, Rebecca Strickler, Johanna (Josh) Lowry, Amber Strickler, Lacey Strickler, Heather Barr and Alison (Kelly) Hobbs; 10 Great Grandchildren, Luke Lowry, Ilia Strickler, Blake McCollough, Julian Cossel, Jaiden Barr, Tristan Barr, Ethan Sickinger, Mia Sickinger, Jaired Riddle and Ivie RiddleA viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at the Southside Blvd. United Methodist Church, Nampa.
