Ermintrude Lewis was born on January 9, 1935 to Leroy Lewis and Lillie Mae Witcher Lewis in Lincolnton, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Lincolnton County Public High School. She worked and retired as a Home Health Aide for over 30 years. She enjoyed caring for her patients and always developed a good raport with them. This was due to her straight forwardness which they learned to appreciate.
Erma as she was affectionately called, was also a mom, grandmother and great grandmother. These three roles were very important to her. She carried them all out separately, making each generation feel special. There was nothing she would not do for her family, going out her way when necessary. Even when she said no, to them it was yes!
Erma had one son Zachary (Scotty), who she loved very much. Over the years, she saw him grow into a spiritual man and this pleased her more than anything. Whenevr she saw him in a suit which was weekly, she would say "so you dressed up" and they would laugh. She was very proud of him. Her only daughter-in-law who was in her life for 50 years cherished the relationship they had and knew she was the best mother-in-law anyone could have. Erma was loved by her family.
Erma had many gifts, besides singing she was known for her cooking skills. When once asked how she learned to cook so good, she replied, "watching my mother." So her dishes were original "Southern cuisines", I am sure those who knew her had a "special dish."
Erma was dedicated to and loved her God. She showed her dedication by the engagement within the Greater Hood A.M.E. Zion Church's ministries, at which she was a member since 2001. She will be missed but because of her gift of training others, God's work will continue.
In additon to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Karen(Kitten): three sisters, Anne, Gwen, and Katie: and one brother, Haywood.
Erma leaves her son, Zachary (Scott): daughter-in-law, Theresa Lewis: Sister, Olivia; five grandchildren. Zachary, Jr, Tiqua, Jovon, Chinnsia, and Keenan: eleven great-grandchildren; and of host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Erma also had a list of wonderful friends and time does not allow us to name them all. However, we must mention Joe Mack who was at her bedside everyday.
