Koenigs, Eugene John "Gene" 88, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on February 19, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Rosary is 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Garden Plain, Kansas. Gene was born on October 3, 1927 in Garden Plain, Kansas, to John and Anna Koenigs; he lived most of his life in Wichita. He graduated from Goddard High School, where he was a football and track star. Gene then served in the Army in World War II occupation of Japan. Upon finishing his service, he attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1951. On August 1955, he married Mary Lue Winter in Andale, Kansas. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Gene was employed as a design engineer and worked for Cessna Aircraft and Lear Jet. After leaving the aircraft industry he worked in the automotive industry where he was vice president of Garnett Auto Supply for 25 years. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years, golfing, playing cards, gardening, and watching KU basketball. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Koenigs; his brothers, Ollie, Ed, Leo and Elmer Koenigs; sisters, Barbara Rau Erker and Tillie Winfrey. Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Lue; his four children, Kenneth Koenigs (Laura) of Longmeadow, MA, Chris Koenigs of Wichita, Carla Feller (Mike) of Lenexa, KS, Paula Koenigs of Cincinnati, OH; four grandchildren, Tom Koenigs (Erica White), Maria Koenigs, Kate and Erin Feller.
