"You gotta enjoy life!"
Eugene Wong, 85, of Henderson, Nevada, was born on April 19, 1936. He went to be with the Lord on, August 25, 2021. He grew up in Los Angeles, California. He was one of nine children, of Shoo Tan Wong, and Lee Shee Wong, two Chinese immigrants from GomBen Village, China.
Eugene has one son, Dereck, and was gifted his daughter, Maria, when he married Lovena. Eugene had a large extended family, and he truly loved all the in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins, on both sides of the family. He had a way of loudly saying, “Brother”, when he greeted his brothers-in-law, and the “Brother” was loudly said in return.
He loved to bowl, and has been a bowler for a long time. He met Lovena at the Wonder Bowl Bowling alley in Downey, where she was a cocktail waitress. It must have been love at first sight. He told his buddy that he was going to marry her. He was the beloved husband of Lovena for 47 years.
Eugene was always a hard worker to provide for his family, and made sure they had a good and enjoyable life. At a very young age, he shined shoes, then worked at the family store, Ying Chong Lung Co. and then to Lucky Grocery Produce Warehouse. He retired from Lucky after 30 years. He also got jobs for others at Lucky, and they also retired from there. He made many friends, and was proud to have worked for Lucky for so many years. We heard many Lucky stories.
Eugene and Lovena lived in Downey California, then relocated to Las Vegas, then to Reno, then back to Las Vegas again, where they lived for 20 years. Bowling, going out to eat, and going to the sports book, was their favorite pastime. A group of friends would meet for a two hour session of eating, talking, storytelling, recollecting good times, at the buffets quite often. Eugene made many bowling friends through the years. He shared many bowling stories to us. He was quite a good bowler. He got many turkeys, and he almost bowled a perfect all strikes game.
Eugene was an excellent cook and cooked many dishes for everyone. Meals such as; a childhood favorite, that his mom made, salted chicken, oxtail and jook soup, French toast and bacon, and many different types of Chinese food for everyone to enjoy.
He loved to shop. He would go to four different stores to get the best deal. One of his favorite stories to share was about being able to get four avocados or tomatoes for $1.00. He loved being around family and friends, close and far. When he would visit, he would always bring you what you needed, or what he thought you needed from Costco. He was a very generous person, and that was who he was, a true genuine, sincere giver. It made him happy to give to others, to treat others with gifts, taking people out to eat, or just spending time sharing stories. He never said anything bad about anybody, and only saw good in people.
Eugene is survived by his brothers Richard, and Ben, and his sisters Nancy and Audrey. His son Dereck, and his wife Susan, and their children, Eugene’s grandchildren; Ryan, and Trisha. His daughter, Maria, and her husband Brian, and their children, Eugene’s grandchildren; Janna, Krysten, Sean, and Paetyn. His 13 great grandchildren; Nathan, Tyler, Gregory, Grant, Ashlyn, Jaxon, Kameron, Audryna, Penelopy, Elijah, Mavrik, Layla, and Paisley.
Eugene was fun to be around, his laughter was contagious, and was always kind to everyone. One of his favorite sayings was; “Life’s to short, you gotta enjoy life.” He loved sharing many stories. He loved you all, and was so blessed by having you all in his life. He will truly be missed, and always in our hearts.
