Eulalio Gil Galindo, 58, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2009, after a long battle with diabetes in Milipitas, California. He was born on March 12, 1951 in Casa Grande, Arizona. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and brother. Gil grew up in the Wellton-Mohawk area and overcame humble beginnings. He earned a BS degree in Recreational Management from San Jose State University and was involved in organizing the community to support Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers. A former administrator for the City of San Jose Parks and Recreation Department and most recently a highly respected Western Regional Director for the Corporation for National Services under the Clinton and Bush administrations. Gil provided formidable leadership for over 35 years. In P&R, he was responsible for the Office on Aging, and established the "Freeze Trigger" program which provided emergency shelters for countless homeless people in San Jose during the winter months. He also coordinated the rescue of stranded residents during the Alviso Flood, worked with the Gang Task Force and Graffiti Abatement, fostered the construction of the downtown Ice Rink and developed community gardens for the city. While working for CPRS, Gil trained and placed AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteers throughout the Southwest Region and California. Gil is survived by his devoted childhood sweetheart and wife of 31 years, Judy Salzman; children, Marcus (Kathy), Nicole, Michael, and Matthew; grandchildren, Noah, Kaleb, and Devyn; mother-in-law, Lucille Salzman; siblings, Irene Fernandez, Margaret (Rick) Newton, Alberto (Nancy), and Luis (Susana). Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Eulalio and Rose Galindo; and brother, Ernesto. A private memorial mass and celebration will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2009.
