Evelyn Doris JenkinsJuly 27, 1917 - March 21, 2013Evelyn D. Jenkins, 95, passed away on March 21, 2013 at Pocatello, Idaho.Evelyn was born on July 27, 1917, in Tigard, Oregon to Herbert N., and Anna MacDonald. Evelyn was the youngest of three daughters, Viola MacDonald Miller, and Mabel MacDonald Holt. She grew up in Tigard and helped her parents run the family general store located on the corner of Tigard an MacDonald Street. Evelyn enjoyed school, doing well with her learning, she was able to test and skipped two grades. This enabled her to graduate from high school early at about sixteen years of age. After graduating from Tigard High School she worked as a telephone operator, a children's governess (nanny) and a chaffer for a casino operator. She would drive between Portland, Boise, Sun Valley and Reno. She was expected to average sixty miles an hour or one mile per minute. She went on her first and only airplane ride, in 1937 with this employer, from Portland, Oregon to San Francisco, Calif. She did not enjoy the spiral landing and had no desire to fly again.Evelyn then came to Pocatello to help her sister and brother-in-law, Fred Miller, at Millers Bakery, located in the 300 block of North Main Street. She would drive the delivery truck of baked goods to the local independent grocery stores and take orders and make deliveries. She met Robert E. Jenkins of the B & J Market located on the 1200 block of North Main. Robert and Evelyn were married on February 28, 1939. They owned the B & J Market for many years. Later the market became the B & J Sharp Shop, which Bob and Evelyn operated until their retirement.Evelyn enjoyed sports especially baseball and bowling. She began bowling in 1947 and had bowled on at least one league team for sixty years, until the age of ninety. Evelyn was inducted into the Pocatello Bowling Hall of Fame in April 2005. She was one of several people who started Bannock Boys Baseball in Pocatello. She was a board member and league secretary for many years, and raised money for the organization. She was an avid supporter of the American Legion Baseball teams and was a fund raiser, as well as, ran the concession stand and was a scorekeeper. She worked many years in baseball during the time her two sons and her grandson played.Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Robert M. and (Janet) Jenkins, Pocatello, Id. and Shawn N. Jenkins, Twin Falls, Id.; three grandchildren, Gina and (Paul) Pomeroy, Boise, Id., Robert J. and (Deborah) Jenkins, Champaign, Illinois, and Scott Jenkins, Boise, Id,; three great-grandsons, Graham, Kendrick and Jonathan Pomeroy, Boise, Id. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters; and her loving husband, of 58 years, Robert E. Jenkins.Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 PM. on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Mountain View Cemetery, section 43 East.Arrangements are under the care and direction of Downard Funeral Home, 241 North Garfield Ave, Pocatello, Idaho (208) 233-0686.
