Evelyn Wavpotich Evelyn Marie Wavpotich passed away peacefully in her home on Hilton Head Island on Monday, February 15, 2016 at the age of 93. She was born on November 29, 1922 and raised in Brooklyn, New York and was the only child of Dagmar and Ralph Safford. She graduated from Bay Ridge High School and attended Farleigh Dickenson University. Evelyn and her husband August (Gus) retired to Hilton Head Island in 1972 and jointly taught cooking classes at the Island Packet Cooking School located at the Gallery. She served as Food Editor of the Island Packet from 1977 to 1989 and focused on healthy and nutritious foods. She amassed a collection of over 1,500 cookbooks and traveled nationwide to learn and write about regional foods and local customs. In addition, she served as President of the Hilton Head Herb Society and was an early proponent of wellness through the use of herbal and natural remedies. Evelyn was a dedicated tennis player and also enjoyed taking sailing vacations with her family in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. In prior years, Evelyn ran a clothing bank with a colleague at International House at Columbia University. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and opened her family's home to visiting Norwegian and international students. Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gus in 2005. She is survived by her four daughters - Christine Loomis of Larchmont, NY; Susan Kiernan (John) of Milton, MA; Jean Solomon Smith (Tyler) of Washington Depot, CT; and Judy Dudley (Mark) of Sewanee, TN. She is survived by thirteen grandchildren George and Sarah Loomis; Jessica Gilmartin (Geoffrey), Jackie Kiernan Kulage (Nono), Mauria Kiernan Pappafotopoulous (Teddy), Owen, Courtney, Heather, and Brendan Kiernan; Caroline and Elizabeth Solomon; Paul Dudley (Lara) and Elise Dudley. She is also survived by four great-grand children: Savannah, Cora and Beau Kulage Jackovides, and Liliana Dudley.
