Francis JonesFrancis Marion Jones "the Legend of Taku Harbor" passed away February 21, 2013, at the Palmer Pioneer Veterans Home.Francis was born on August 12, 1925 in Merriam, Kansas. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. Arriving in Juneau in February of 1984, Francis fell in love with the spirit of Alaska. Inspired by Stan Price (Bear Man of Admiralty Island), Tiger Olson, of Taku Harbor, with the help of Joe Smith, Sr. and many others, he crafted a house boat on a log raft. He spent the next fifteen years living the Alaskan life he so loved on his house boat in Taku Harbor, and he only fell off a handful of times. His real joy during his time at Taku Harbor was reading his bible and contemplating the lessons of the Word. After surviving treatment for two different cancers, and later pneumonia, he returned to Taku Harbor to find that his beloved house boat was gone. He never found out what happened to it. But that didn't dampen his adventurous spirit; Francis chose to make the best of what life offered. A while after losing his Taku Harbor home he moved to Palmer to the Pioneers Veterans Home. Being Francis, he managed to get kitchen privileges in the staff kitchen, allowing many to enjoy his award winning buttermilk biscuits and pie. Francis loved life; He loved God.A celebration of life will be held at 6:00pm Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Glacier Gardens with a potluck reception following the service. Please come to share memories and a toast in Francis honor!
