Frank David "Blackie" Jernigan, Sr.1931-2017 Frank David Jernigan, Sr., USAF (Ret.), passed away peacefully on June 6, 2017, surrounded by his three children at his home on Deer Point Lake in Panama City, Florida. 'Blackie' was born on February 9, 1931, in Pensacola, FL.Jernigan graduated from Pensacola High School in 1950, where he received a scholarship to play football at the University of Mississippi. Throughout his four years at Ole Miss, he loved playing football under legendary head coach, Johnny Vaught, and was especially honored to have been part of his beloved Rebel football team during the 1953 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana. After earning a bachelor's degree in 1954, Jernigan was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served on active duty for 20 years as an MWR (Moral, Welfare and Recreation) Director. While stationed in Vietnam, Jernigan was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his efforts in the construction and management of recreational facilities in a combat zone. After retiring to Deer Point Lake in 1974, he returned to college and earned his Master's Degree in Vocational Administration. Shortly afterwards, Jernigan returned to work in U.S. Air Force civil service positions in South Carolina, Georgia and finally in the Panama Canal Zone.Jernigan enjoyed boating and fishing, especially with his children and grandchildren, watching the wildlife around Deer Point Lake, SEC football and always faithfully cheering on his Ole Miss 'Rebs'.He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Eva Jernigan; brothers, Luther and A.J.; sister, Mary Jernigan Morris, and granddaughter, Lauren Elaine Goudy. Jernigan is survived by his daughters, Lyn (Ray) Hice of Newnan, GA, Susan (Kevin) Wiggins of Rome, GA, and son, Frank (Kris) Jernigan, Jr. of Pensacola, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.On behalf of our father, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to his dear friends, the LeBoeuf, Walker and Mitchell families, for their many years of friendship, care and kindness.
