Franklin “Frank” W. Dunford Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on November 4th 2021 in his home in Boulder, Colorado from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.
Frank grew up in San Diego CA. He enjoyed bicycling, tennis, handball and surfing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved hanging out with his friends. Despite memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s, he always remembered and spoke fondly of his close group of friends.
In the mid 1950's Frank served in the Spanish American Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he learned to speak Spanish. He counted his mission as a life-changing experience.
Frank married Helen J. Manwaring, December 12, 1959. He and Helen built a beautiful life together and had 5 children. Helen passed away November 12, 2007.
Frank served in the US Army as a Private First Class and was stationed at the Schofield Barracks Army Base in Hawaii.
He had a long and fulfilling career as a researcher and criminologist at the Behavior Research Institute and University of Colorado, Boulder. Frank earned a PhD. from Brigham Young University, Masters and BA degrees from San Diego State College.
He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in numerous church callings where he made many life-long friends.
Frank married Arlene A. Manning Dunford March 22, 2014. Arlene brought much joy to Frank’s life and was a loving spouse to him. Before his declining health, Frank and Arlene enjoyed travelling together visiting friends and family.
Frank is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Helen J. Manwaring, his father Franklin W. Dunford Sr. mother Louise Wood Dunford, and his step-father Vernon M. Strolz.
He is survived by his wife Arlene, sister, Penny, and his 5 children A. Mitchell Dunford (Cathy), Wendy D. Dunford Ericson (Kelly), Adam A. Dunford (Susan), Benjamin B. Dunford (Tamara), and Daniel R. Dunford (Erica), 28 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed by many.
A funeral service will be held Monday November 15, at 11:00am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 701 W South Boulder Rd, Louisville, CO 80027.
There will be a visitation and viewing from 9:00am to 10:30am.
It is requested that masks be worn inside the building as a safety precaution.
