HUNSCHE, FredOpa Opa Fred Hunsche (90) died peacefully on February 20, 2017 in Gibsons, BC. He was born on December 22, 1926 in Ijmuiden, Netherlands, the fourth of 10 children. After surviving the depression and occupation of his country, he joined the Dutch army where he learned the auto-mechanics trade, becoming an instructor and achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. In 1956 he, his wife Ann and their two sons immigrated to Canada joining his brother Dick, Dien, and family who had already settled in Vancouver. Fred and Dick started the Hunsche Bros Service business which grew to include three Chevron full service stations and a body shop in the east end of Vancouver. They operated this business until 1976 when they semi- retired to Pender Harbour where they purchased a waterfront acreage and the Chevron gas station that was located on the corner of Hwy 101 and Francis Peninsula Rd. Fred retired in 1991. Fred was very active and community-minded, serving at various times as a South Pender Harbour Waterworks Trustee, Commander of the Pender Harbour Power Squadron and President of the Pender Harbour Legion. Fred also kept busy in his lei- sure time and enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying including floats, boating and dancing. Fred was predeceased by his wife Ann in 1983 and is survived by his sons, Bill (Barb), and Peter; daughter Chris Fleming (Stu); 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Stein and Witte and many nieces and nephews in the Netherlands and Canada. Fred was appreciative of this great country and the opportunities that it provided him and his family. Special thanks to friends and clinic staff who enabled Fred to remain in his home for as long as he did and to the staff and residents at Alder Cottage in Christensen Village for their care, compassion and camaraderie in his final year. A memorial service will be held on March 18 at 1 p.m. at the Pender Harbour Legion.
