FREDERICK 'FRED' HAAS, 96 ELIZABETH - Frederick "Fred" Haas, 96, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died June 10, 2015, at home. Fred was born on the family farm in Woodbine Township on March 16, 1919, the son of Jacob and Friedericke (Brudi) Haas. He attended Allen Country School in Woodbine Township. Fred proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II from 1941-1945. He participated in the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge, receiving a Purple Heart after being wounded. Fred always held a strong faith in God, and was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elizabeth, where he served as an usher for many years. Fred was a lifetime farmer who worked with his brothers, Joe, Gus, and John. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, tinkering, and inventing. Fred is survived by many nieces, nephews, and sister-in-law, Lorraine Haas of Elizabeth, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Elizabeth, with Reverend Michael Nesbit officiating. Burial will take place in Woodbine Cemetery, Woodbine, Illinois, with full military rites accorded by the Hanover and Elizabeth VFW. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the service on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
