YOCUMFrederick L.Frederick Lurcott “Rick” Yocum passed into God's hands on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 78 years of age. He cared deeply for his wife Jacquey, his family, his church, and his community. Rick was born on July 16, 1938, in Bronxville, New York to Frederick Hall and Edna (Lurcott) Yocum who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover and Dartmouth College where he earned a BA degree. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve, Nike-Ajax Missile Systems Division. Rick enjoyed a diversified career in business management, consulting, and venture capital. His early employment was with Young and Rubicam Advertising and Squibb-Beechnut Corp. in New York City. He joined Questor Corporation in 1970 and was employed in the Spalding and AP Parts Divisions in general management positions, moving his family to the Toledo, Ohio community in 1978. In 1986, he founded Yocum Consulting Associates, Inc. which was active in start-up and turnaround management consulting activities in a wide range of business categories for over 25 years. In this capacity, he was an active director on a number of company boards including serving as the Chairman of the Advisory Board for Principle Business Enterprises of Dunbridge, OH and as a member of the Board of RWC, Inc in Bay City MI. During his career, Rick took on a number of operating challenges as well. He was Chairman/CEO of Tel-Matic Systems for five years during which he and his team established a regional series of training centers during the early days of network computing. In addition, he was actively involved in business development for Solar Cells, Inc. (the predecessor of First Solar) during its initial period of thin-film photovoltaic module development. His investment/venture capital experience was also extensive. In the early 1980's, he was President of Entelco Corporation, a venture capital and private investment company. In later years, he was affiliated with two Small Business Investment Corporations (“SBIC's) which invested in small-medium business opportunities, primarily in the Mid-West. Throughout his career, Rick felt it was important to “give back” to the community and consistently volunteered his time to non-profit causes that were important to him. He served the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years, serving as Scoutmaster, Council Board Member, Membership Chairman, and Foundation Trustee of the Erie Shores Council. He was honored to receive the Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition for volunteer service at the Council level. Rick was on the Board of the ProMedica Health System for six years serving as Chairman of the Board of The Toledo Hospital, Flower Hospital, Paramount Insurance Company and as Vice-Chairman of the ProMedica Board of Trustees during that period. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Toledo for over 20 years serving on its Board as well as Vice-Chair of its Foundation. He was an active Board member of both The Toledo Symphony and Sauder Village and served both organizations as Treasurer during his service. Other Board activity included the University of Toledo's Innovation and Enterprise Board, the Northwest Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and TASBA. While in Toledo, Rick and Jacquey were active members of St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church where Rick served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden of the church.Rick was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who cherished time with family and friends. He and Jacquey, married for 50 years, particularly enjoyed travel and bicycle trips with friends to many locations in the U.S. and Europe. In 2015, Rick and Jacquey moved to the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, NC. He is survived by his wife, Jacquey; daughter, Stephanie W. (Charlie) Hansell of Nashville, TN; son, David C. (Leah Cauley) Yocum of Atlanta, GA; brother, Edward S. (Lucy) Yocum of Mamaroneck, NY; and four grandchildren of whom he was particularly proud, Asa and Corinna Yocum, and Claire and Charlie Hansell. A service for family will be held at 4 p.m., December 17th at St. Giles' Chapel at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, NC.A memorial and celebration of Rick's life, welcoming all friends and family, will be held in late January, 2017 in Toledo, OH.
