He graduated from Hillsboro High School in June 1942. He proudly served 21 years in the U.S. Army from March 1943 through July 1965. He graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne Command Parachute School on Feb. 12, 1944. He served with the 17th Airborne Division during World War II and participated in Operation Varsity, which was the last full scale airborne drop of World War II. He served in Korea from September 1957 to December 1958. On March 25, 1954, Frederick married the love of his life, Gisela Maria Schuster. After retiring in 1965 from the Army, he remained employed as a civilian employee for the U.S. government managing the recreational services for the Arctic Valley Ski Resort and the Moose Run Golf Course, until his retirement in 1989. During this time, he received numerous awards and accommodations. He received the Commander's Award for Civilian Service in 1980 for the golf course and ski bowl manager at Moose Run. In 1986, he received the Certificate of Achievement for outstanding management of the Moose Run Golf Course.Fred loved the Alaska outdoors, participating in downhill skiing, gold panning and mining, camping, hiking and fishing. He had a true love for skiing. As children, he and his brothers even strapped barrel staves to their feet in New Hampshire to ski. During his stint at Fort Richardson, he taught solders how to ski at the Eklutna Army training area while camping on the glacier. He mounted ski bindings for a dollar while working in his basement on Fort Richardson. His spirit and enthusiasm for skiing as the manager of Arctic Valley military side provided for a quality skiing experience for the GI's and military dependents. Fred Murdough was still skiing at Alyeska at age 89. More of Fred's history can be found on the ALSAP (Alaska Lost Ski Area Project) website - see Arctic Valley and Eklutna. Fred also made sure his wife, sons and grandson knew how to get down the hill.
