Gary Raymond Moon passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.Gary was born on December 3, 1940 to Raymond and Beulah Moon in Humeston, Iowa. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Des Moines he followed in his father's footsteps and began barbering at Moon's Barber Shop on the Southside.On June 16, 1962, Gary married the love of his life Donna Wohlwend. They had two children. Gary was a very dedicated hands on father. He and Donna celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary the week prior to his death.Gary joined the Des Moines Police Force and proudly served on the force for 26 years, retiring as a sergeant in 1993.In his spare time, Gary enjoyed spending many vacations trout fishing at Montauk State Park in Salem, Missouri. Due to his declining health he had been unable to go for many years. In May his children and grandchildren made his dream come true one last time. They loaded up his wheelchair, breathing machine and took him back to his favorite fishing spot where he had the time of his life.Gary was a member of Grace Baptist Church where he served for many years. He had a very strong faith in the Lord.He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Patty Garton.Gary is survived by his loving wife, Donna; children, Kristy (Brad) Nachtigal and Jim Moon; grandchildren, Michael Nachtigal, Tommy Nachtigal, Brandon (Kyla) Nachtigal and Jamie Moon; great-granddaughter, Avery Nachtigal; siblings, Kenny (Linda) Moon, Nancy Culver and Jimmie (Nan) Rickey.The family would like to express a special thank you the staff of Unity Point Hospice and Nurse Noelle, whom all showed such care and support during this past year. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30th at the funeral home followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Grace Baptist Church.Condolences may be expressed at
