Gayle's Story

Gayle was born on March 22nd, 1951, in Trenton, NJ. She was the cherished daughter of Armond and Elizabeth Knight. She was raised in Asbury Park, where her laughter echoed through the streets and her dreams took flight.

Gayle's voice soared in the halls of Asbury Park High School, where she found joy and camaraderie in the Glee Club. Though her path diverged from the traditional academic journey, her determination shone brightly as she earned her GED in 1981.

Gayle met her late husband Theodore James Dennis Jr., a young soldier stationed at Ft. Monmouth. In the dance halls of Eatontown, amidst the swirling skirts and lively music, the two started their union. A year later, their hearts intertwined, and they married in 1971. The two traveled together to Germany during one of his military postings and Germany became one of her favorite places. Together, they share three beautiful children. Years later, however, they divorced and went their separate ways.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Gayle was loosely involved with the Black Panthers and other political movements, her voice a beacon for change and justice. Her love for jazz music was a constant, a melody that underscored her life, drawing her back to the jazz festivals of Asbury Park, where her spirit danced freely.

Gayle pursued a career in nursing, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. For over three decades, she dedicated herself to the care of others, working tirelessly through sleepless nights to provide for her family. Her hands, skilled and gentle, comforted countless patients, while her unwavering dedication inspired those around her.

Gayle moved from Asbury Park to Keansburg, New Jersey, where her daughters lived. She was happy to be surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren. Yet, life's trials tested her resilience when her youngest daughter, Tahnitia, passed away unexpectedly in 2009. Gayle's heart, though shattered, found strength in the love she bore for her grandchildren, whom she raised with the same devotion she gave to her children.

In 2016, while in her mid-60s, Gayle earned a degree in psychology. Her pursuit of knowledge was a testament to her indomitable spirit, a reminder that it is never too late to follow one's passions.

As the world faced the shadows of the COVID pandemic, Gayle's health waned. Diagnosed with COPD, she faced each day with courage, her family a constant source of strength and solace. Despite the challenges, her spirit remained unyielding, a testament to her enduring love for those she held dear.

On November 9, 2024, Gayle was called to eternal life, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by her beloved children, Tjurra Roberts and her son, her cherished grandchildren Aryell Lukabu, Ariana Dennis, Elijah Dennis, Anastasia Roberts, Cameron Roberts and Tejon Singleton, and her treasured great-grandchildren, Devonte Dennis, Khole Roberts, Zaji Lukabu, Liam Jackson, Zakai Lukabu, and Brynn Dennis. Her memory lives on in the hearts of countless friends and loved ones. Gayle, your journey has ended, but your story will forever be told in the hearts of those who love you. We will miss you deeply, but your spirit will always be with us, a beacon of love and hope.
