Gene Ann Sones, 68, of Purvis, MS, passed away peacefully on
July 31, 2020, surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was
born to parents William Wallace (Bill) George, Jr. and Marion Margot George on
February 17, 1952, in New Orleans, LA. She graduated from Pearl River Central High School in 1970 and then went
on to study Cosmetology at Pearl River Community College where she was a member
of the String of Pearls. She completed her certification as a Cosmetologist and
worked as a hair stylist for many years. She also worked as an assistant
teacher at Purvis Elementary School for several years.
Gene Ann's greatest love and highest calling was in being a
godly wife and mother. She devoted her
life to her children and grandchildren and was a beautiful example of
gentleness, strength, and sacrificial love.
Other passions included flower gardening, antiques,
decorating, cooking, sewing, and being outdoors in God's nature.
Some of her fondest memories from early childhood included
growing up on the farm in Carriere, MS, seafood on Friday nights, and dancing as
a little girl with her daddy. Some of the things she cherished as she grew
older included time out of her busy routine to spend time with her sisters and
first cousin for their annual “sisters meeting,” big holiday get-togethers, and
being on “the land” with her beloved Kim.
Gene Ann married her high school sweetheart, Leonard Kimball
Sones III, on July 17, 1993, in Carrier, MS. Together they had twelve children: Maria Noel (Stacy) White, Mary Ann
(David) Byrd, Jerry Wayne (Jenni) Purvis II, Daniel George (Jaclyn) Purvis,
Whitney Carol (Morgan) Henderson, Adam Henry (Courtney) Purvis, Gabriel Luke “Gabe”
Sones, Kecia Lynn (Daniel) Bilbo, Kimball Brent (Danielle) Sones, Mitchell Len
Sones, Ava Chantelle (Jack) Corbin, and Mallory
La'Shae (Quentin) Maynard.
Gene Ann is survived by her husband Leonard Kimball Sones
III; sisters Margot George Thigpen, Wanda Moser Bourn, and Sandra George
Robinson; daughters Maria Purvis White and Mary Ann Purvis Byrd; sons Daniel
George Purvis, Adam Henry Purvis, and Gabriel Luke “Gabe” Sones as well as numerous
cousins, nieces, nephews, and fifteen grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Louis and
Laura Mae Margot and William W. George, Sr. and Emilie George, her parents Bill
and Marion George, her son Jerry Wayne Purvis II, her daughter Whitney Carol
Henderson, and her grandson Braxton Cole Henderson.
