Gene Edward Byers AMARILLO-Gene Edward Byers, 74, of Amarillo, passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016. He was born on Dec. 23, 1941, to Joe Willie and Bessie (Street) Byers in Lorenzo, Texas. Gene attended Elementary school in Lorenzo, Texas, and High School in Slaton, Texas. Gene was a man of God!! He loved the Lord with all his heart. He was called to the Gospel ministry on June 17, 1965. He served at Mt. Pleasant Church in Lorenzo, Texas, until he moved to Canyon, Texas, in 1969. Gene then united with the Pentecostal COGIC where he served on the Ministerial staff and Evangelist department on both the local and District level. Gene is preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe Willie and Bessie Byers; and his three brothers, Robert Lee Byers, Willie Joe Byers and Emerson Eugene Byers. Gene leaves to cherish his life: his wife, Ruby Byers; four sons: Reginald Eugene (Charlene), Lewis Durell, Randall Duane, Fredrick Douglas; one extended son, Glenn Maurice (Carla); one daughter, Vivian Diane; four sisters, Charlene Watson, Betty Jones, Dorothy Gonzales, JoAnn Hern, and Francis Eddins/Joe Henry; two brothers, Richard Byers (Jo Ann) and R.J. Byers (Arnesia); five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Pentecostal Temple COGIC, Amarillo, Texas. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo, Texas, under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.
