George Nickolas Colevas was born on September 24, 1939, at the National Homeopathic Hospital in Washington D.C. to the late Paras Speros Colevas and Nellie Louise (Howes) Rolka. He took the hand of Jesus on January 12, 2024, at the age of 84, and is now reunited with the love of his life, his beautiful wife, Helen.
He proudly Served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960 in the 568th Corps of Engineers (LE) V Corp, as a Heavy Equipment Operator and earned a permanent rank of SPC4, by an Act of Congress. He was very proud of this accomplishment. He talked often of the time he spent in Hanau, Germany and traveling around Europe while stationed there.
After his Army service, he returned to the States where he met the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, the love of his life, Helen Bryant. Neither hell nor high water could stop their passion of love for one another. Two weeks later they traveled through a snow storm to Lebanon, VA to wed on December 23, 1960. They were blessed to have celebrated 48 1/2 years of love and hundreds of dances, especially around the kitchen. George and Helen had four children together, who survive them: Tina Rolka of Ashburn VA; Mary Ann Colley of Bland, VA; Lisa (Rolka) Wheeler (husband Ernest) of Rixeyville, VA; and their miracle, a son, Tobe Colevas of Rixeyville, VA (girlfriend Rebekkah Hurlock).
Also adopted by the heart, son and great friend, Elton John Hitt.
He retired from Fairfax County Public Works after a horrific work injury.
George was a hardworking man his entire life, supporting his family and completing countless projects around his home. He constantly gave unselfishly to everyone he knew, taking in almost EVERY person in his and his wife's family, without any questions, never passing judgement, and without accepting a penny! He always said "you don't kick a person when they're down. You love them and feed them." Daddy was never a rich man, but with his generosity to everyone around him, no one was ever the wiser.
He was baptized at age 33 and would display Godly love throughout his entire life. He never met a stranger.
He was more commonly referred to as Daddy, Pops, Old Man, Georgie and PawPaw, endearing him to friends and family alike.
He was most proud of being a Greek descendent, which is displayed on EVERY wall of his home. When asked what was the BEST day of his life.... he replied without hesitation, “the day each of my children were born”.
There was nothing more important to him than his family. He dedicated his time to teaching his children, grandchildren and anyone who was interested, how to fish in the pond behind his house. They all knew that Pawpaw always had donuts and a full candy dish waiting for them.
He is survived by twelve grandchildren: Lucas Wooden, Jonas Roberts (Julie), Olivia (Bryant) Letelier, Jason Bryant (Brittany), Christopher Ball, Jr. (Jill), Colleen (Ball) Shermeyer (Liam), Austin Ball (Brooke), Cherokia Martin (Dillon Kidd), Hunter Wheeler (Bethany), Hannah (Wheeler) Kaess (Jacob), Kayla Shifflett (Dale Walter) and Kelsey (Colevas) Biedler ("Bubba").
