George Gabriel Villere, 72, died of cancer in his home, surrounded by his loving family on November 15, 2016. He was born on January 16, 1944 in New Orleans to the late Ernest Caliste Villere and Yvette Chequelin Villere. George graduated from Rollins College in 1966, and began his career as a securities analyst with Spencer Trask & Co. in New York City before returning to New Orleans in 1967 with his wife Fran to begin work at St. Denis J. Villere & Co. He served as a valued member of the Boards of Directors of The Arts Council of New Orleans, The Louise S. McGehee School, Lighthouse Louisiana, and Foundation Fighting Blindness. Although blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa, he was never defined by the handicap: he was an avid water and snow skier, runner, hiker, world traveler, and voracious reader. He was known and loved for his joyful and contagious laugh. He is survived by his wife, Fran Villere, his favorite daughter Mathilde Villere Currence, his sons Christopher Deschamps Villere and Lamar Gable Villere, son-in-law Richard Morrison Currence Jr., daughter-in-law Michelle Bauman Villere, and grandchildren Lucy Caliste Currence, Frances Villere Currence, John "Jack" McDonald Currence II, Cora Jane Villere, George Bauman Villere, Molly Logan Villere, and Mathilde Bernard Villere. He is also survived by his brother St. Denis Julian Villere and was preceded in death by his sister Mathilde Villere Young. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at HOLY NAME OF JESUS CHURCH, 6367 St. Charles Avenue on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:45 AM. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in George's name to Lighthouse Louisiana, 123 State Street, New Orleans, LA 70118.
