MAKORTOFF, George: It is with great sadness that we inform you that George Makortoff passed away quietly on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017 at Sun Valley Retirement Residence in Penticton BC. George was born on May 10, 1934 to John and Annie Makortoff in Grand Forks BC. He was the fourth youngest of five children. George attended school in Grand Forks, and during his young years, he was active in the USCC youth cultural and sport activities. He also participated in the ever famous male choir. He quit school at an early age and went to work at the Grand Forks Sawmill. After a few years at the sawmill, George started looking for a better paying job. He joined the Teamsters Union and worked on at various construction sites such as the Hi-arrow (Hugh Keenleyside) Dam near Castlegar, Mica Creek dam north of Revelstoke and other construction jobs throughout British Columbia. He was well liked by both management and by his co-workers. While working on various construction sites, he moved from Grand Forks to Penticton and lived there till his passing. George spent any spare time on the golf course, calling Twin Lakes Golf Course his home away from home. His love for the game reflected in his low handicap of 4. After retiring he joined the seniors group and they toured the Okanagan Valley, the Boundary and the West Kootenay golf courses playing in senior tournaments. George always came home with either a prize or trophy, of which he was very proud. George made many friends during his golfing career. George enjoyed traveling. He took many trips to Cuba and Mexico, where he made numerous friends. George was pre-deceased by his parents, his 3 sisters, a brother and 2 nieces. He leaves behind 2 nieces, 1 nephew, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Bright memories of him will remain in our hearts forever. He will be missed by all. May he rest in peace, and God accept his soul into his eternal abode. George was cremated and there was no service by his request. Donations may be sent to the USCC Iskra Office in Grand Forks, BC.
