A life of Ambition and Passion
In Loving Memory of George Nera
George Nera, a man of vibrant spirit and boundless ambition, departed this world on December 23, 2022, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his loved ones and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Born on June 19, 1936, in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, George's life was a testament to the pursuit of dreams, dedication, and a passion for living life to the fullest.
Born at home to his mother, Virgina Yee, and birth father, Mateo Nera, George was raised alongside seven siblings, with him being the second oldest. From a young age of two, he exhibited an affinity for sports and dancing, capturing the thrill of competition that would remain a defining aspect of his character.
As a young man, George's adventurous spirit led him to a summer in Las Vegas, where he worked as a waiter and found himself in the company of legends like Frank Sinatra. Inspired by the stars and their performances, he nurtured dreams of becoming an impersonator who could serenade audiences. His journey of self-discovery continued through Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix College, and Arizona State University, where he excelled not only academically but also athletically, playing football for the college.
With a sense of duty and honor, George joined the army, serving two years and finding himself dispatched to Kirchgoens, Germany, and Paris, France. Upon his return, he delved into the world of bodybuilding, sculpting his physique to awe-inspiring proportions, including his renowned 18-inch biceps. His dedication earned him the prestigious title of Mr. Arizona and graced the pages of numerous magazines, leaving an indelible mark on the world of fitness.
As his life's journey unfolded, George embraced dance with the same passion he brought to all of his pursuits. Becoming a dance instructor, he immersed himself in the rhythms of tango and salsa, and his passion drove him to compete in dance competitions across the nation. His pursuit of excellence extended into his professional life, as he achieved a prominent position as a finance manager, and by the age of 30, he became the Vice President of the Chambers of Commerce in Chandler, Arizona.
In 1967, George married the love of his life, MaryLou Yrigoyen (Mitzi), a beauty queen. They celebrated their union with a grand wedding and were blessed with five daughters—Nicole (who passed after birth), Nichelle, Dindi (Gingi), named after his favorite song by Frank Sinatra, Georgette, and Lisa. While life presented its share of challenges, George and MaryLou faced them with unwavering resilience.
After his children had grown, he took on the role of president at the Arizona Training & Evaluation Center (AZTEC), leaving an indelible mark on both the business and community fronts.
Throughout his life, George was a man of diverse talents and passions. His dreams were monumental, and his ventures into property and business ownership were emblematic of his unyielding ambition.
George's role extended as a grandfather, relishing in the presence of six grandchildren—Chantelle Florez, Richard Florez, Dominik Florez, Hannah Nera, Paige Gallegos, Hallie Hadi, and four great-grandchildren.
A pillar of the community, George found comfort in his spiritual connection with the I AM Church of Arizona.
In his later years, he became a veteran caregiver and retired in Anthem, Arizona.
George Nera, the "it" man of his time in Arizona, reveled in life's treasures—casinos, Vegas, dancing, mingling with stars—finding joy in every moment. His zest for life was contagious, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to have known him.
As we bid farewell to George, we remember the man who epitomized the pursuit of dreams, the embodiment of resilience, and the celebration of life. His memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. May his spirit forever dance on, a guiding light in the hearts of those who loved him.
