Dr. George M. Neville, Jr.1929 - 2017Dr. George M. Neville, Jr, 87, of Gulf Breeze, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 19, 2017. Dr. Neville was born on September 4, 1929 in Meridian, Mississippi, the son of George M. Neville, Sr. and Margaret Hulett Neville. As a boy, Dr. Neville was an altar boy and member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and achieved the distinction of Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1947 where he excelled in academics and football earning an athletic scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Neville received his pre-med education at Millsaps College where he received the H.T. Newell Trophy as Most Valuable Player in 1950. He completed his first two years of medical school at Ole Miss where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical fraternity and Kappa Alpha Social fraternity. He also received The Eben J. Carey Memorial Award for the highest proficiency in the study of anatomy. He graduated from
Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1954. He served as an intern with the
US Navy in Portsmouth, Virginia and served as a Flight Surgeon at Saufley Field in Pensacola, Florida. Upon the end of his military service in 1958 he began decades of his private medical practice in Algiers, Louisiana, Butler, Alabama and Meridian, Mississippi. Dr. Neville is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Neville; daughters Mary Katherine Neville (Bonnie), Virginia Ann Neville Boyd (Rusty), Susan Elizabeth Neville Floyd (R.T), Jacqueline Hulett Neville Reid (Patrick); grandchildren Jeanna Elizabeth McNeil (Keith), William Alexander Reid, George Neville Reid and Katherine Grace Floyd; one great-granddaughter Marin Elizabeth McNeil and his beloved maltese Rebel. Other survivors include brothers Frank Neville (Joan) and Paul Neville, brother-in-law James W. Bush (Elizabeth) and cousins Fred Hulett and Caroline Dunaway (Fred).Dr. Neville's hobbies included golf where he was a member of the Baker Group at Tiger Point Country Club. He was an enthusiastic shell collector at his Sans Souci condo on Pensacola Beach. Dr. Neville was an avid reader of historical fiction and presidential biographies. He also enjoyed coin collecting. The Memorial Service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 3:00PM at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to the Pensacola Humane Society, St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church and the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
