George Weldon Owens, 84, passed away on January 2, 2015 in his home with his loved ones in Yuma, AZ but his larger-than life persona and trademark strong wit will not be forgotten. He was born on May 28, 1930 in Floydada, TX to James and Vera Owens.George grew up in a large loving farm family and came from humble beginnings. While in high school he worked for flight lessons and became a licensed pilot at age 18. He later used this to his advantage in impressing his new wife as he flew her over Yuma County.George served in the Air Force and was stationed in Yuma, AZ in 1952 where he met and married his wife of 58 years, Velma Owens in 1955.George was one of the lucky ones who woke up every morning looking forward to go to work. He was honorably discharged and began immediately the next day as a civil service heavy equipment operator. He was quickly promoted to Road and Grounds foreman at the Marine Corps Air Station and retired in 1986. He enjoyed playing rhythm guitar and singing for local bands. He continued to sing and hum to the entire family. George loved classic country music and every silly song he could remember, which was more than you can imagine! He was dedicated to his family and affectionately known throughout our home as Poppy. George was a witty man, a lifetime learner, and an amazing storyteller. He never turned down a card game or the chance to tell a silly joke. He is one of a kind and we were very lucky to have him as long as we did.George is survived by his sister Johnnie Ward Barton of Lubbock, Texas, brother Chick of Allen, TX, and Dale of Moss Point, MS, children Bobbie Lemp and husband David H. Lemp, Gay Owens Hetrick and George M. Owens and wife Amberly Davis-Owens, grandchildren David A. Lemp, Jessica Gentile and husband Jonathan Gentile, Kyle J.
