George Richard PalmerDes MoinesGeorge Richard "Mick" Palmer, 83, passed away peacefully of Alzheimer's' with his family by his side on December 13, 2016. He was born on July 12, 1934 in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School. George met his wife Cynthia (Carr) Palmer of 61 years while home on leave from the military. George and Cynthia had three children.George retired from the military after serving his country for 32 years. At his retirement, George received a Medal of Recognition from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. George's grandchildren (their "Popsy") were his world and he enjoyed all the time they spent together. George was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeyes fan regardless the sport and a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Through the years he had many dogs and they were all very special to him.George is survived by his children, Rick Palmer of Minneapolis, David Palmer and his son Andrew of Omaha, and Cindi (Craig) Dawson of Grimes, and their children Grace, Owen, Jack and Max: dear family friend Hector Villarreal of Omaha; sister-in-law Mary Jo (Bob) Oden of Waukon, IA; and brother-in-law Dennis (Sarah) Powers of Longmont, CO.George was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia Palmer; mother Margaret Palmer; father Henry Palmer; grand-daughter Amy Sue Palmer; mother-in-law Ocie Powers; and father-in-law Fred Powers.Memorial contributions may be made to The New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
