George William Cox, 85Muncie - George William Cox, 85, beloved husband, father, and retired architect passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017, after a brief battle with cancer. Bill was born on March 20, 1932, in Winchester, Indiana to the late George O. and Ruby M. (Hardwick) Cox.Bill graduated from Lynn High School in 1950 and joined the
Army where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in Germany during the
Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge, he enrolled in Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, graduating with a BA in Architecture. After winning first place for his home design at the 1962 Indianapolis Home Show, Bill started his own architectural firm, G.W. Cox and Associates, Architects and Planners, in 1963. He remained in practice in this location until 1980, designing many notable governmental, commercial, and residential projects in Muncie, Lynn, Winchester, Rossville, and Indianapolis. Bill continued his architectural career in Dallas, TX and Cincinnati, OH before returning home to Muncie when he retired in 2000. Retirement allowed Bill to pursue his other passions including reading, scrabble, playing guitar, banjo, and piano; woodworking, golfing, drawing, painting, and inventing. Bill will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, an extremely talented artist, avid golfer, and loved and admired by his many friends and family. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Laura Mae Azbell Cox; children, Jeffrey (Donna) Cox, Erin (Scott) Rosson, Marsha (Mark) Thurston, and Chris (Amanda) Cox; seven grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. There was a private gathering of close family members on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, however, there will be no public funeral as per Bill's wishes. Bill's children would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff in the Bristol wing at Westminster Village Muncie for the wonderful care they gave their dad.
