ONEIDA >> Gerald R. "Jerry" Smith, 82, formerly of 405 Oxford St., Oneida, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born on Jan. 30, 1934, in Syracuse, a son of Carl and Pauline (Falsey) Smith.Jerry spent his early years in Syracuse and Morrisville, attending the Morrisville-Eaton schools. He later lived in Chittenango, Whitelaw, and Canastota. He, also, lived at Lebanon Reservoir, before moving to Oneida in 2004. He and his wife, Linda, wintered in Florida for many years.He worked as a carpenter in the Syracuse area from 1952 to 1968, and then worked for the Painters and Allied Trade Local Union No. 31 in Syracuse, for 14 years, retiring in 1982. He later retired as superintendent at Stoneleigh Apartments in Canastota, in 1996.Jerry had been a member of the New York State Army National Guard from 1952-1955.He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture, knickknacks, and later, carousel horses. When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.He married Linda J. Morton on Sept. 11, 1954, in Eaton, N.Y.Surviving, besides his wife, Linda, are: two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence "Larry" and Tammy Smith of Cazenovia, and Steven and Sara Smith of Canastota; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Smith of Clockville; five grandchildren, Tracy and Chris Boyle, Jason and Sara Smith, Scott and Ashley Smith, Jennifer Smith, and Joshua Smith; five great-grandchildren, Michael Boyle, Levi Smith, Kyle, Alexandra, and James Smith; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald "Ronnie" and Gail Smith of North Chittenango, and William "Bill" and Rose Marie "Rosie" Smith of Canastota; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Jeanne Eastman and her companion, Roger Hoose, of Verona, Carolyn and Terry Curtis of Canastota, Donna Storer and her companion, Kevin Putterick, of Cazenovia; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jerry was predeceased by a brother, Richard Smith; and two sisters, Joan Austin and Sharon Bouffard.Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. The Rev. William M. Wilcox, pastor of the Fyler Community Church, will officiate. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, prior to the service, from noon to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. In his memory, contributions may be made to the , CNY Chapter, 441 W.
