Gerald Strait Workman, 82, of Winston-Salem, NC, died October 23, 2016. Jerry was born on March 10, 1934 in Rock Hill, SC, to the late Mildred Strait Workman and Thomas Calvin Workman. After graduating from Rock Hill High, he attended Clemson Agricultural College graduating in 1957 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He married Harriet Fraser Easley in 1957. The couple lived in Seattle, Washington where he worked for Boeing Corporation and El Paso, Texas, where he served in the United States Army Air Defense. He and his wife settled in Charlotte, NC, where they raised their four children. While in Charlotte he worked for Douglas Aircraft, the Ervin Company, John Crosland, First Colony Investments, and Renaissance Construction. The couple later moved to Manteo, North Carolina where Jerry owned and operated a successful construction company. He leaves behind many homes, apartments, and businesses that he can proudly say he built.Jerry was active in the Episcopal Church and served several terms on the vestry at St. John's in Charlotte and St. Andrews By-The-Sea in Nags Head. He was an accomplished gardener, known for his green thumb and vast vegetable garden. His church family looked forward to the summer Sundays when he would bring buckets of tomatoes to share. Jerry and Harriet enjoyed travelling together and were fortunate to enjoy trips to many countries with friends. Jerry loved spending time with his extended family at Pawleys Island where he enjoyed fishing, crabbing, seining for shrimp in the salt marsh, and cocktail hour. He often entertained the family by reciting poetry that he had memorized as a young man.Jerry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriet Easley Workman; four children, Alice Workman Canterbury of Charlotte, NC; Gerald Strait Workman, Jr. (Julia) of Hillsborough, NC; Dr. Claude Raymond Workman (Melissa) of Winston-Salem, NC; and Emily Workman Lewis (Jeff) of Manteo, NC; ten grandchildren: Sarah Canterbury Kain (Matt), Ralph William Canterbury, Jr. (Allie), Patrick Fraser Canterbury, Calvin Raymond Workman, Baird Lewis Workman, Matthew Thomas Workman, Caroline Elizabeth Workman, Ross Fraser Workman, Grayson Pearce Lewis, and Fraser Elizabeth Lewis, and two great grandchildren, Hannah Pearce Kain and Madison Elisabeth Kain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Strait Workman and Thomas Calvin Workman, and a brother, Thomas Calvin Workman, Jr.A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday October 28, 2016, at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, 85 Baskerville Dr., Pawleys Island, SC 29585. Interment of ashes will follow at All Saints Church Cemetery, 3560 King's River Road, Pawleys Island, SC.
