Gilbert L. Martinez, 75, a lifetime resident of Los Vigiles, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.He was born on March 20, 1937, in Los Vigiles, to the late Jose A. Martinez and Maria Aragon Martinez.He retired from the United States Air Force in 1975 as a Master Sergeant E-7. His many tours included Roswell, Okinawa, Tucson, Omaha, Alamogordo, Thailand, England, Spain, and Alaska. During this time he received numerous medals and awards. He was a member of the VFW, DAV, and American Legion. After retiring from the Air Force he returned home to build his business Martinez Custom Cabinets. He enjoyed fishing, working on his land and going for wood. He was Former Commander of the VFW and for many years Gilbert called the Bingo at the VFW and DAV. He was preceded in death by his wife: Margaret Martinez; parents: Jose A. and Maria Martinez.; brother: Ruben Martinez; sister: Cecelia Lucero; and infant sister: Victoria.He is survived by his daughter: Evelyn Marquez of Los Vigiles; grandson and granddaughter: Ralph Marquez, Melissa Marquez and their father Ralph Marquez all of Albuquerque; sons: Lorenzo and Michael Martinez of Los Vigiles; granddaughter: Candace Martinez of Phoenix; grandson: Steven Martinez of Pasadena and their mother Pauline Martinez; sisters: Susie Martinez, Helen Trujillo (Lupe) of Los Vigiles, Rose Romero (Joe) of Las Vegas, Christine Lucero (Simon), Lorraine Roybal (Mike), and Rachel Martinez all of Los Vigiles; brother: Pilar Martinez (Josie) of Los Vigiles; god-daughters: Karen Martinez Coca of Montezuma, and Germaine Melton of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law: Bernadette Baca of Las Vegas and Alice Romero (Bob) of Taos; brother-in-law: Herbert Lucero of Albuquerque; special aunt: Lila Varela of Denver; aunt: Leonore Aragon of Montezuma; cousin raised as sister: Alice Encinias of Albuquerque; special nieces: Debbie Martinez of Taos and Jares Herrera of Santa Fe.Rosary devotional services were held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas. Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 also at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment followed at Los Vigiles Cemetery in Los Vigiles with the following serving as casket bearers: Paul Martinez, Tim Gurule, James Martinez, Carlos Montano, Ruben Lucero, and Ishmael Martinez. Serving as honorary bearers were Luis Gonzales, and all his nieces and nephews.
