Services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11:00 am at Avenue Baptist Church, 901 W. 70th Street, Shreveport. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6 at Benevolent Funeral Home, 1624 Milam, Shreveport, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Memorial Service will be held at 5:45 pm. Gladys (Jack) was born on July 6, 1931 to Robert G. and Carrie L. Dudley in Macon, GA. One of eight children, she was the third child and the oldest daughter. She was educated in the Macon public school system graduating at 15 and matriculating to Fort Valley State College in 1947. There she received a degree in Home Economics in 1951 and immediately started her career in education. She was the first in her family to attend college and the first to receive her MA in Education which she received from La. Tech University. A devoted and dedicated educator, she taught in Georgia, Maine, and Louisiana culminating in 42 years of teaching. In 1955 she married Joseph Louis Mitchell who died in 1956. In 1961 Gladys married Charles Phillips an airman stationed at Warner Robins AFB, GA. In 1968 they moved to Shreveport, LA where he was stationed at Barksdale AFB. Charles died in 1999. Her parents, one daughter and four of her five brothers have also predeceased her. She served her community through her church, Avenue Baptist Church, her beloved sorority and other organizations. She was a 67-year member (Golden Soror) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., having been initiated in the Alpha Beta Chapter at Fort Valley State College. In 1952 she was a charter member of Epsilon Omega Omega chapter in Macon, GA and has been an active member of Delta Lambda Omega chapter in Shreveport for many years. She formerly served as president of the Shreveport Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction. A loving and supportive mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt she leaves to mourn, her daughter, Joanne Mitchell Davis (Carvel), Oklahoma City, her son, Gerald Phillips of the home, granddaughters, Chivonne Danielle Davis Enendu (who lovingly cared for her these last few months), Cara Jacqueline Davis, Edmond, OK, great-granddaughter, Czerny Aurora Scott, Edmond, OK; sisters, Mary Ann Nelson (W.K.), Aberdeen, MD; Zella Dudley, San Diego, CA; brother, Carl M. Dudley (Dora), Macon, GA; sisters-in-law, Lois Dudley, Augusta, GA and Claudine Dudley, Atlanta, GA. Plus, she leaves a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
