Gloria (Doty) DethlefsenAGE: 76 • KeansburgGloria (Doty) Dethlefsen, 76, passed away on October 4th with her loving family by her side. Gloria was born on Dec. 2, 1940 in Dover, NJ. She was raised in the mining community of Richard Mine where her father was an iron ore miner. Upon the mine closing in 1957, her family moved to Keansburg where they had vacationed during summers. Gloria was employed by the Borough of Keansburg for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. In 1970 she began her career as a crossing guard in front of St. Ann's Church where she was a fixture for 4 years, also serving as a police matron. In 1974 she began work in Borough Hall, first as a secretary and then administrative secretary and deputy registrar of vital statistics, she also served as deputy and acting Borough Manager. Gloria was a member of The New Point Comfort Fire Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary for 20 years, serving several years as President. In 1976 she was honored to be chosen to christen the new fire engine. She was also active with both the Boy and Girl Scouts.Along with family and friends Gloria enjoyed camping trips along the eastern coast, from Disney World to Canada. She enjoyed visits to lighthouses, beaches, mountains and historical areas. In 1968 while visiting friends in Greenville, Maine, Gloria and family fell in love with the Moosehead region. Gloria loved ice skating, skiing, snowmobiling and all that winter snow. In 1987, with the help of family and friends Gloria and family built a second home in Harfords Point, Maine on the shores of Moosehead Lake. Gloria's brother and his wife Kathy presented Gloria with a brass plate for the mantle, "Gloria's Getaway" which the house is known as. Gloria and her family spent much time there, especially after retirement, enjoying the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains. Gloria enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family both in Maine and NJ. Thanksgiving was always her favorite holiday to host which was fitting as the Doty family were direct descendants of the Mayflower pilgrims. Gloria was predeceased by her father, Albert and birth mother, Lois Doty (d.1946) mother Mary Hogan Doty, brother John Patrick Hogan, sisters Patricia Fetherston & Alice Sullivan, special friend and sister-in-law Ellen Ciok, grandniece Megan Hartigan, close friends Victor Appaneal and John & Maureen Appaneal. In July, Gloria lost her faithful companion, Hazel, a rescue dog she adopted and loved.Gloria is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Gary M. Dethlefsen, her devoted children, son Gary A. Dethlefsen of Greenville, Maine and daughter and son-in-law Barbara & Charles Vilanova of Leonardo, NJ, her cherished grandchildren Paul & Allyson Vilanova and her brother & sister-in-law Albert & Kathy Doty, Little Silver, NJ. Gloria is also survived by her extended family members, Jack & Linda Armstrong, Walter & Cheryl Dethlefsen, Michael Ciok, Irene Dethlefsen, Michael Dethlefsen, her nieces and nephews and their children, special childhood friends Trudy (Daley) Bodine of Granbury, TX and Rosalie (Machuga) Stierch of Wharton, NJ, along with numerous other close friends. Gloria's family would like to thank all the friends and family who shared in her last few months. Per her request funeral services will be private. To honor Gloria donations may be gifted to the Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital, CA Dean's Greatest Need Fund, PO Box 1129, Greenville, ME 04441. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Oct 21st, 1:00 pm at New Point Comfort Firehouse in Keansburg, please join us. Please dress casual, no suits, jackets or ties. Also, no black, the brighter the better.
