Gloria Yvonne Towns-Cherry, also known as Von, peacefully passed away on July 15, 2023, in LaGrange, Georgia. Born on March 25, 1954, to Clara Mae Towns and Johnny Whitfield, she was 69 years old at the time of her passing.
Von was a remarkable woman who lived a life dedicated to her faith and community. She began her spiritual journey at an early age, joining the Mt. Pleasant CME United Methodist Church and Zion Hill Baptist Church. Later, she became a member of St. John Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a Deacon Wives assistant, church Clerk, and member of the Missionary Society. Her commitment to her church and her role within it was a testament to her unwavering devotion.
In 1973, Von entered into holy matrimony with Freddie Cherry, and together they shared 50 beautiful years of marriage. Their union was blessed with two loving daughters, Tiffany and Brittany. Von was a loving and devoted mother, always putting her family first and creating a nurturing home for her children.
Von's memory will be cherished by her husband, James (Freddie) Cherry, her daughters Tiffany (Daniel Phelps) and Brittany Cherry, as well as her loving sister, Mona Lisa Ward. She will also be fondly remembered by her grandson Carter and Karson Cherry, and her granddaughters Destiny Olgetree, Deshauniquie Ogletree. Von's presence in the lives of her family members will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Gloria Yvonne Towns-Cherry will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 12:00pm at St. John Baptist Church, located at 820 Cherry Dr, Lanett, Alabama, 36863. The service will be officiated by Pastor Charles E. Trammell Sr., under whose leadership Von found solace and guidance.
During this time of mourning, let us remember the remarkable life that Von lived and the impact she had on those who knew her. Her kind spirit, unwavering faith, and dedication to her family and community will be forever cherished. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that she is now in the loving care of God.
