Granville Roberts, 86, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was born on March 10, 1931 in San Augustine, Texas to the union of James Wiley and Lillian (Doggett) Roberts. He worked for many years employed by Burns Construction Company in Las Cruces, New Mexico as a foreman throughout the state of New Mexico, Arizona and West Texas . Other jobs included a brief time as an employee with the City of Alamogordo and finally he worked at Alamo Transit Company in Alamogordo, retiring in 2007.During his working career, he met and made many friends. He is remembered by people he trained to work on heavy equipment and shared his knowledge and skills to complete numerous projects.He often talked about being appointed a chief volunteer laying concrete around Corinth and New Hope Baptist Church by the pastors at that time. The finished sidewalk and walkways are a sample of his masonry skills. He also poured cement for his family and friends to enhance the look of their homes.Granville was a member of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New Mexico #11. He was often called upon to make repairs or minor improvements to the Prince Hall on Delaware Street. He was an active member until two (2) years ago when he was made a lifetime member.Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Velma Roberts; his children, Sharon McDonald (Edward), Jean Branch (Lewis), Sheila Roberts, Johnny Roberts, Eddie Roberts, Chenelle Furnace (Burney), Stephanie Gamble (Trent), and Terrance Roberts (Melissa). He also leaves as a legacy his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, James Wiley Roberts Jr., Beatrice Roberts, Maggie Thelma Benton, Leonard Roberts, Lucy Mae Kelly and O'leatha Starks; son, Granville Roberts Jr.; grandchildren, Roshod Erving Roberts, Eddie Roberts Jr., and Celena "Nene" Branch.Finally, Granville was a great historian for the City of Alamogordo. He could tell you every detail of repairs, improvements (fire hydrants on Florida Avenue), and developments since 1952. He was a wonderful man with many friends and gave his energy, time and service to help someone else. He will be missed as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, cousin, mentor, advisor, and friend to all. We love you and will see you soon.
