Jul 06, 1947 - Jan 25, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Church, Gregg E.Gregg Eugene Church, 69, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at home in Louisville, Tennessee. Gregg was born on July 6, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas to Ted and Venita Dameron Church. His childhood was spent working on the family farm in Derby, Kansas. He graduated from Mulvane High School in 1965, and served in the United States Army from 1968-1971, including earning a Bronze Star during two tours in Saigon and Can Tho, Vietnam. A strong believer in the power of education, he attended Wichita State University and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1974 on the G. I. Bill with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He attended the University of Maryland's Computer Science graduate program when it was in its infancy. On November 27, 1971, he married Janice Ann Schuette at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church in her hometown of Newton, Wisconsin. They lived in Maryland for forty years until 2009, when they "retired" to Tennessee. Gregg was a serial entrepreneur. He and his wife founded GEJAC, Inc., a computer software company in Laurel, Maryland, and ran it successfully for twenty years. He subsequently started a website design and hosting company, a GIS company, a voice-over IP international calling company, an import/export company, an online bread bakery, and he served as President of the Washington Park Industrial Condominium. Most recently, he started CLT Properties, which owns and manages rental properties in the local Maryville, Alcoa and Louisville area. Throughout the varied paths of his career, he served as a role model and touched the lives of many through mentoring. He was generous with his time, and had seemingly endless patience when helping others reach their potential. Gregg greatly enjoyed collecting coins. He amassed the first known complete set of US $20 gold pieces, and spent numerous hours with his children picking through loose change to find wheat pennies, buffalo nickels, and other unusual currency. In addition to his wife and partner of 45 years, he is survived by: his three children, their spouses, and granddaughter: Heather and Jeff Miner of Morrison, Colorado, Teresa and Matthew Nuzzo and their daughter Emma of Southern Pines, North Carolina, and Jason Church of Rockville, Maryland. He is further survived by: his siblings Karlin Lawing of Wichita, Kansas, Coyd and Candy Church of Derby, Kansas, Kirk and Cindy Church of Andover, Kansas; his in-laws: Caroline and Larry Sonnenburg, Virginia Temme, Donald and Myra Schuette, all of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Dennis and Sandy Schuette of Plymouth, Minnesota; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends throughout the United States and abroad. Gregg was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Venita Church, and his parents-in-law, Arno and Edna Schuette. Memorial services will be held at 5:30 PM at the house on Saturday, May 20. Cremation has occurred and inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia at a later date.
