LAS VEGAS, NV - Gregory Michael Jackel, age 57, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada due to complications from an infection received from a minor motorcycle accident. Greg is a former resident of Racine, Wisconsin born on June 13, 1957, the second of three children born to Ernest and Dolores (née Niemiec) Jackel. Greg went to St. Patricks and St. Ritas grade school. Greg graduated from St. Catherines High School in 1975. In 1975, Greg joined the U.S. Navy and received training as a Medical Corpsman. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Ranger for a period of time and also was stationed in the Philippines for two years. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1979. After leaving the Navy he attended St. Lukes Nursing School in Racine and graduated in 1983. He became a Registered Nurse working at St. Lukes Hospital in Racine. Greg missed the warm weather environment that he enjoyed in his two years in the Philippines and decided to move to Las Vegas in March 1986 where he began a career as an Emergency Room Nurse working at several Las Vegas area hospitals, eventually becoming a Nursing Supervisor. He married the former Susan Brown on May 23, 1990 and became the proud father of two wonderful children, Hannah and Max. In his younger days, Greg loved spending time at his grandparents trailer on Long Lake near Dundee, Wisconsin. He called it his favorite place on Earth. He also enjoyed playing city league softball with the Vanderheyden Leather and Helbling Upholstery teams before moving to Las Vegas. In more recent years, Greg loved spending time with his children, watching them grow into fine adults. Hannah just graduated from college with a degree in Journalism in December 2014 and Max graduated from high school in 2013. Greg enjoyed music and recently began playing in an amateur band as a keyboardist and drummer, which he found extremely gratifying. He was also a fan of the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and the University of Wisconsin football and basketball teams. Greg unfortunately suffered from poor health on and off over the past twenty years. However, he stated shortly before his death that 2014 was one of the best years of his life and he was looking forward to getting healthy and having more good times in 2015 and beyond. Greg is survived by his two children Hannah and Max, his parents Ernest and Dolores, two brothers Paul and Peter and sister-in-law Terri. He was preceded in death by grandparents Bill & Martha Jackel and John & Marian Niemiec, plus an Uncle Hans Jackel. Greg was well liked, personable and well respected in the medical industry that he worked in. He will be missed by both family and friends more than words can describe. In accordance to Gregs final wishes, there will be no traditional funeral mourning his passing. Instead, his family and friends in Las Vegas will celebrate his life with a Gregapalooza, Hawaiian shirts mandatory! Gregs body will be cremated and his ashes spread over Long Lake in Wisconsin by his family sometime next summer.
