Gregory W. PhillipsMay 13, 1948 - January 18, 2017Salem - Gregory Wayne Phillips passed away late Wednesday evening, January 18, 2017, at his home, in Salem, Oregon. Greg was born on May 13, 1948, in Yakima, Washington to William Wayne Phillips and Olive Jane (Carrell) Phillips. He grew up, with his close knit family, in Toppenish, Washington. He enjoyed playing with his brother and cousins, and helping his parents at the Date Street Grocery Store and Service Station. In 1962, his family sold the store and moved to Salem, Oregon. He was a 1966 graduate of South Salem High School. He also was a member of the National Guard, serving at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.Greg was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed jeep racing and having a good laugh with friends. He also treasured his time with his family, where he particularly enjoyed waking up the kids with "the sweetest word". Greg worked for the Salem Motor Pool, and moved up through General Services, until he was fleet manager for the State Motor Pool. He finished his career, working for the Oregon Department of Transportation, where he had many friends and colleagues. Greg was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Bradley Wayne. He is survived by his wife, Judy, his brother Steven W. (Mary Beth), his two sons, Steven C., and Shawn Wininger (Tiffany), nieces Jill Johnson (Blain) and Angie Hemphill (Yancey), nephew Brent, his granddaughters Taylor Thornton, and Jayce Nardin, grandson, Jayden Wininger, and two great-grandsons Noah, and Tristan, two step-sons Jerod and Reggie Keefer, and five step-grandchildren Daisy, Ethan, Elin, Brianna and Jacoby. He also leaves behind many other family and friends who will greatly miss his kind, gentle spirit.Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017, at 2:00P.M. at V.T. Golden's Funeral Home in Salem, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Doernbechers Children's Hospital. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
